Airbound’s Physics Bet, Infineon To Acquire C2i, and Karnataka Suspends Licenses

Plus InCred Capital Launches InCred Black, and fundraising news about Utsav, MATTER, and CarbonStrong

Airbound is an unusual startup to judge by normal numbers. The Bengaluru company has completed a little over 13,000 flights and is still broadly pre-revenue. Skye Air, another Indian drone company, says it has already crossed four million deliveries and reported about ₹15 crore of operating revenue in FY26.

Yet Airbound has raised nearly $50 million from Greenoaks, Lightspeed, Lachy Groom and now DoorDash.

The reason, we think, is simple. Investors are betting on the aircraft, not the delivery business.

Founder Naman Pushp started experimenting with drones during Covid when he was about 15 or 16. His basic idea was that delivery drones are too heavy. A drone may carry a one-kilogram parcel, but several kilograms of aircraft, motors and batteries still have to be kept in the air.

Airbound's current aircraft weighs roughly 2.5 kg including a one-kilogram payload. It takes off vertically and then flies more like a plane. The company says its lightweight carbon-fibre structure and lithium-ion batteries can bring operating costs down sharply.

That claim still needs proof. Airbound talked about delivery costs of around ₹24 in 2025, while the more recent ₹1 figure remains a target rather than a fully disclosed cost after labour, batteries, maintenance and aircraft depreciation.

Healthcare has been a smart place to start. At Narayana Health, Airbound has used drones to move diagnostic samples. On one four-kilometre Bengaluru route, road transport was reportedly stopped within weeks because the drone was faster and reliable.

The larger opportunity is quick commerce. India was already doing roughly 10.6 million quick-commerce orders a day by June 2026, and the market could reach $50-70 billion by 2030. Airbound is now developing a drone that can carry up to 5 kg, which would make it useful for a much larger share of food, pharmacy and ecommerce deliveries.

DoorDash's investment makes this more interesting. Pushp has said he eventually wants Airbound to be closer to the "Boeing" of drone delivery than the airline, supplying aircraft to companies that already own the customers and delivery networks.

The biggest problem is regulation. Airbound's Indian operations still remain within visual line of sight. The economics become far better only when one operator can supervise many autonomous drones.

That is why Airbound should not be judged on revenue yet. The real test is whether it can make the 5 kg aircraft work, manufacture it cheaply at scale and get regulatory permission for large BVLOS networks.
