Sarvam AI is reportedly looking to raise $250-300 million at a $3 billion valuation, double what investors valued it at just four months ago. This is the same company that started with $41 million in funding in December 2023, when many questioned whether India really needed another ChatGPT.
Sarvam has since come a long way. Its 2025 model, Sarvam-M, was built on Mistral Small, but this year it released its own 30-billion and 105-billion-parameter models trained from scratch. That's considerable progress, although it doesn't make Sarvam a global leader. In April, independent tests gave its 105B model a score of 18 against 33 for OpenAI's gpt-oss-120B. Sarvam still trails stronger models in complex reasoning and coding.
Its bigger opportunity lies elsewhere. Indian banks and insurers need AI that understands regional accents, mixed Hindi-English conversations and old documents. Mahindra Finance's Sarvam-powered agents have reportedly handled over one crore calls across 12 languages. Edtech startup Supernova reported cutting transcription costs by 30-35%, while HealthPlix used the technology for over 50,000 medical consultations. These are customer-reported results, but they suggest genuine demand.
Government backing has helped. Sarvam received ₹246.72 crore worth of computing support under the IndiaAI Mission, not a cash grant. Maharashtra has approved a two-year, ₹11.26 crore deployment for about 2,500 officials. Such contracts help Sarvam enter institutions where winning trust and business can take years. But Indian ownership alone isn't a lasting advantage. Global open models can also run on servers in India.
HCLTech's $150 million investment could be even more valuable. It brings enterprise customers and engineers who can turn models into working systems. Yet HCLTech has just announced a major partnership with Anthropic too. Even Sarvam's strategic investor wants alternatives. Sarvam itself now hosts models such as GLM and Gemma alongside its own, suggesting it may earn money serving AI, not just developing it.
The unanswered question is revenue. Sarvam reports millions of daily interactions but hasn't disclosed enough about sales, margins or customer retention. At $3 billion, even a generous 30-times revenue multiple would require $100 million in annual sales. Training and running models is expensive, and competitors keep improving.
Sarvam has moved well beyond the Indian ChatGPT clone perception. But investors are pricing in a much bigger achievement: turning government support, enterprise relationships and growing AI usage into a profitable business that can eventually stand without subsidies.
