Adobe’s purchase of Rilo is easy to read as a success story. Started in 2025 by IIT Bombay batchmates Dhruv Jaglan and Georgi Boby, Rilo raised about $1 million at a reported $10 million valuation, reached more than 10,000 users and found an exit to Adobe within a year.
But this looks less like a software acquisition and more like a talent and technology deal. Rilo’s six-member team is joining Adobe, some IP is being licensed, investors are getting an exit and the product is shutting down. There is no disclosed ARR or paying-customer number. Adobe appears to be buying capability before Rilo proved it could become a large standalone business.
That distinction matters in AI. Ten thousand users can come quickly through free credits and experimentation. The harder numbers are how many users pay, whether they stay and what it costs to serve them.
Adobe does not have the same distribution problem. More than 20,000 brands use its enterprise applications. It ended Q2 FY26 with $27.1 billion of ARR, while AI-first ARR had crossed $500 million. A six-person team can be worth far more inside that distribution machine.
Its $1.9 billion Semrush acquisition helps explain the strategy. Semrush brings search and brand data, while Rilo was building agents that could turn information into action. Adobe is putting more of AI marketing inside one platform.
For Indian AI, this is the harder issue. Nasscom counted more than 890 Indian GenAI startups in 2025, with over 83% focused on applications. That is also the layer most exposed to larger software companies that already own the customer relationship.
The contrast with Aampe is useful. MoEngage bought it for a reported tens of millions of dollars, but Aampe had raised about $28 million, had more than 30 customers and was growing ARR by 150%. Its product continues inside MoEngage. Rilo is closer to an acquihire.
There is also a capital lesson. A company that raises $1 million at a $10 million valuation can make a modest strategic sale work. Raise $5 million at $50 million instead, and the same exit may no longer satisfy investors.
That can still produce good founder outcomes and strong returns for seed funds. It does not always produce venture-scale companies. The test for Indian AI is whether more startups eventually own the customer relationship and become the buyers.
