India’s Youth Internet Crackdown, Meesho Gets Fined, and Centre x Spacetech Startups

For the past decade, India focused on a single goal: get everyone online. Success was measured by cheap data and the spread of smartphones. But the tide is turning. Two of the country’s most tech-heavy states are now trying to do something that seemed unthinkable a few years ago. They want to pull teenagers off social media.
Karnataka recently proposed a ban on social media for anyone under 16 in its latest budget. Andhra Pradesh is following suit by looking at international examples to see if they should set the limit at 13 or 16. These moves show that the conversation in India is moving away from "Digital India" expansion toward a period of strict boundaries.
The reasoning is clear. India has over a billion internet users and about 500 million social media accounts. The average person spends over three hours a day on these apps. At the same time, cyberbullying impacts a significant portion of young people. Officials now view long hours of scrolling and addictive algorithms as a genuine crisis for mental health and focus.
While the government sees this as a health crisis, the tech industry sees it as a threat to its business.
Teenagers are the lifeblood of social media. They drive trends and stay on platforms for decades, making them incredibly valuable to advertisers. Cutting off the 13 to 16 age group in major states would shrink the user base and make it much more expensive for companies to find new customers.
Education startups are also at risk. Many companies use YouTube and Instagram to share free lessons that eventually lead students to sign up for paid classes. If younger teens lose access to these apps, these startups will have to spend much more on traditional ads or school deals to find new students.
Making these bans work is another problem entirely. Current laws already require parents to give permission for data use, and officials are looking at using government IDs for age checks. However, linking social media to national IDs creates huge privacy risks and makes it easier for hackers to steal sensitive information about children.
Past efforts to block content show that bans are rarely effective. Young people often find ways around restrictions using VPNs or different apps. A ban might only create a "shadow market" where the tech-savvy stay online while others lose out.
Some experts suggest a different path: change the way these apps are built rather than who can use them. Instead of a total ban, the government could target features like "infinite scroll" or "autoplay" that keep kids hooked. They could also demand better privacy settings and more control for parents.
The choice made now will decide if the next decade of India’s internet is defined by locked gates or smarter safety rules.
