Rooftop Wars, Paytm Drops Plans, and Zaggle’s Acquisition
Plus CarDekho Launches Amber, and fundraising news about KAT, SolarSquare, and Suminter India Organics

MS Dhoni’s investment in SolarSquare is being described as a celebrity endorsement of clean energy. A more practical explanation is that SolarSquare has gained something the rooftop solar industry has struggled to build at scale: consumer trust.
Dhoni joined the company’s $53 million Series C round through Midas Deals and became its brand ambassador. The funding reportedly values SolarSquare at around $470 million. Its revenue grew from roughly ₹170 crore in FY24 to ₹350 crore in FY25, with an estimated ₹700 crore in FY26. The company has installed systems in more than 50,000 homes across 29 cities and claims an annualised revenue run rate of ₹1,000 crore.
Those numbers explain why Dhoni invested. They do not fully explain why SolarSquare wanted him.
A residential solar system costs around ₹2-4 lakh and involves technology most homeowners cannot easily assess. Buyers may struggle to judge panel quality, inverter reliability, waterproofing, earthing or whether an installer will still be available years later to honour a 25-year promise. A local contractor may offer a lower price but disappear after installation. Tata Power carries stronger institutional trust, although it operates through a broader dealer network.
SolarSquare needs to charge enough to cover design, financing, installation, monitoring and maintenance while convincing customers that a younger company will remain dependable. Dhoni’s reputation for reliability and calm execution helps fill that gap. His presence could reduce hesitation, improve lead conversion and lower customer acquisition costs.
The government-backed solar push, however, also creates complications. A typical 3 kW system costs about ₹1.8 lakh. After a subsidy of up to ₹78,000, the homeowner may pay roughly ₹1.02 lakh and recover the cost through electricity savings in a little over four years. But subsidised systems must meet domestic-content rules. India reportedly has nearly 200 GW of module capacity but only around 30 GW of cell capacity. If compliant cell supply is limited, prices and installation costs rise, reducing the benefit passed to consumers.
Discoms face another conflict. Wealthier households with high electricity bills help subsidise other users. Rooftop solar removes some of these profitable customers, so delays in approvals and net metering reflect financial pressure as well as administrative problems.
Maintenance is another long-term challenge. Dust, pollution, bird droppings, roof leaks and inverter failures require local service for decades. SolarSquare’s guarantees may distinguish it from unorganised installers, but they also create a large future obligation across many cities.
Dhoni can help win the first sale. SolarSquare now has to prove that its service can justify the trust he brings.
