Satvacart’s Scale Problem, VinFast Halts Production, and BlackRock Buys Ather Shares

Plus fundraising news about Alteon, Yuma Energy, and Minimac Systems

Satvacart’s shutdown after 12 years is unusual because this was not a grocery startup that simply burnt too much money and ran out of cash. It had been talking about unit economics long before that became fashionable.

In 2016, Satvacart said it had cut delivery cost from nearly ₹300 to about ₹25-30 by concentrating subscription orders such as milk and vegetables inside Gurugram housing societies. It reached unit-level break-even within 14 months and later reported positive EBITDA. Better sourcing, lower discounts and private labels improved margins further.

The problem was that Satvacart proved a small cluster could work. It never proved that the same economics could survive across 100 clusters.

Milkbasket is a useful comparison. It followed a similar micro-delivery model and was also based in Gurugram. By FY20, it had reached ₹322 crore of revenue and more than 130,000 households. It was still loss-making, but the loss was only ₹15.7 crore. Satvacart had better early profitability, but never built comparable throughput.

The gap widened after 2021. Satvacart said it was in advanced talks to raise around $50 million and had ambitions of reaching $1 billion in GMV. That round never materialised. Its total disclosed funding over its lifetime remained only around $2.2 million.

Meanwhile, quick commerce changed the market. Blinkit, Zepto and Instamart built hundreds and then thousands of dark stores. Blinkit now has more than 2,400 stores and has reached positive adjusted EBITDA margins. Zepto is still heavily loss-making, but generated more than ₹22,000 crore of FY26 revenue and processed roughly 64 crore orders.

That is why investors could fund Zepto despite its losses while staying away from Satvacart.

Investors are not choosing losses over profits. They are asking what another ₹100 crore can create. At Zepto or Blinkit, they can model what happens if margins improve even slightly across billions of rupees of sales. Satvacart never gave them the same scale on which to make that calculation.

Later financial data also show how fragile its profitability was. Satvacart Supermart reportedly generated only around ₹1.4 crore of FY23 revenue against ₹2.4 crore of expenses.

Satvacart’s mistake was therefore not that it cared too much about profitability. It was that profitable local operations were never converted into proof of scalable economics.
