SiMa.ai has now raised about $500 million and is valued at $1.45 billion. That sounds like a big validation for a company building AI chips between Silicon Valley and Bengaluru. But it also tells you something else about this business: semiconductor companies need a lot of money long before they become large businesses.

The company is trying to solve a genuine problem. NVIDIA is excellent for AI, but not every robot, drone, factory camera or car can carry a power-hungry GPU. SiMa is building chips that can run AI models closer to the machine, using much less power. Its software is also designed to make it easier for customers to move away from NVIDIA.

The technology looks promising. The business is much harder.

A semiconductor company can win a customer today and still wait two or three years for meaningful revenue. SiMa’s own automotive roadmap points to production beginning around 2028 for some programmes. Before that comes testing, integration, software work, safety checks and repeated changes from the customer.

And even a design win does not guarantee sales. The car can get delayed. The robot may not sell. The customer may cut volumes.

Ambarella shows how difficult these economics can be. It already generates about $391 million in annual revenue and has gross margins of around 59%. Yet it spends nearly $239 million a year on R&D and still reported a loss of about $76 million.

That is the part investors should pay attention to.

SiMa’s latest round is $150 million. Ambarella spends more than that on R&D in eight months.

The costs also do not stop after the chip is designed. Large customers need engineers for integration, software, testing and support. Chip companies also have to book manufacturing capacity months in advance. Ambarella had more than $80 million of manufacturing commitments at the end of FY2026.

This is where SiMa’s $1.45 billion valuation becomes interesting. The company says revenue has grown quickly, but it does not disclose the actual number. It also talks about more than 150 customers and partners, but we do not know how many are already producing meaningful revenue.

That distinction matters more than another benchmark showing how many TOPS the chip can deliver.

Competition will only get harder. NVIDIA is moving into lower-power systems. Qualcomm is pushing aggressively into robotics and already has a $65 billion automotive design-win pipeline. Hailo now has Microchip behind it, which gives it global sales, support and long product cycles.

SiMa therefore has to do more than build a better chip. It has to make switching easy, support customers for years and keep spending on the next chip while the current one is still trying to scale.
