Swiggy Launches DeskEats, VinFast Kicks Off India Production, and Govt Likely To Exempt EVs

Plus fundraising news about Mitigata

Swiggy is no stranger to experimentation. From launching ultra-fast grocery delivery with Instamart to dabbling in concierge services with “Crew” and even rolling out Pyng for professional tasks, the company has developed a playbook: identify emerging urban use cases, build a custom layer on top of its existing infrastructure, and see what sticks. The latest to emerge from this playbook is DeskEats - a workplace-centric meal experience that’s less about food innovation and more about intelligent segmentation.

DeskEats doesn’t introduce new restaurants or exclusive food partners. Nor does it offer cafeteria integration, backend coordination with attendance systems, or batch-wise delivery linked to office workflows. Instead, the innovation is cosmetic but context-aware. It takes Swiggy’s existing restaurant listings and reorganizes them into work-relevant categories - “Teamwork Bites,” “Value Combos,” “Office Fuel” - making it easier for office-goers to discover meals that fit their schedule, setting, and dietary preferences.

It’s smart packaging. If you're someone ordering lunch between back-to-back meetings, DeskEats shows you desk-friendly combos that don’t spill, smell, or take too long to eat. And if you’re using your work email, you unlock extra perks via Swiggy’s Corporate Rewards Program. But none of this changes the core infrastructure. The food comes from the same kitchens. The delivery system is the same Swiggy logistics network. What’s different is how the frontend communicates with a specific user mindset.

DeskEats is less a new vertical and more a testbed for contextual user segmentation. And it’s an idea Swiggy could easily replicate for other audiences. Think of a “StudyEats” for students pulling all-nighters, a “FamEats” for household group ordering, or “FitEats” targeting the calorie-conscious. It’s the same food, same delivery system - but marketed and organized to feel tailor-made for a specific moment.

From a business standpoint, this strategy makes sense. Customer acquisition is expensive, and loyalty is hard-won. By curating experiences that resonate with niche user needs, Swiggy increases engagement without additional operational overhead.

While Swiggy is tailoring experiences for end-users, Zomato is playing a different game in the same arena. Its “Zomato for Enterprise” vertical is structured to serve corporate clients directly - pitching curated meal plans, managed cafeteria services, subscription meals for employees, and even one-time catering for events and town halls. Zomato is positioning itself as a food infrastructure partner to companies, and not only a delivery app. This means deeper integrations, longer sales cycles, and potentially higher LTVs per client - but also higher complexity and lower scalability in the short term. The contrast is stark: Zomato wants to win the office via enterprise contracts; Swiggy wants to win the employee via better personalization.

The DeskEats playbook is also not uniquely Indian. Globally, companies like DoorDash and Deliveroo have experimented with workplace-oriented offerings - though usually in partnership with employers.

DeskEats is not a game-changer, rather it’s a cosmetic repackaging of existing capabilities. But it shows how Swiggy thinks. This isn’t about adding new SKUs or building a new supply chain. It’s about increasing relevance in specific user contexts - and doing so fast, with minimal capex. If successful, DeskEats will validate a model of modular product-market fit that Swiggy can roll out across segments. And that, in a tight-margin industry, might be the real innovation.
