Vaaree’s Moat Problem, Nykaa’s Latest Acquisition, and Livlong 365 Launches SurgiCare

Plus ICC Loyalty Gets Acquired, and fundraising news about Vaaree, GetVantage, and Superleap

Vaaree’s ₹65 crore Series A gives the company more room to grow, but it does not remove the basic problems that have made online home decor a difficult business in India.

The idea behind Vaaree makes sense. It works directly with more than 200 factories and artisans, carries over 80,000 products and tries to make an overcrowded category easier to shop through curated collections. Its VibeCheck tool is meant to help customers visualise rooms and find products that fit a particular look. The company also claims return rates below 5%, which would be useful in a category where reverse logistics can quickly eat into margins.

Still, the business remains very small compared with the capital it is consuming. Revenue grew from about ₹8.8 crore in FY24 to ₹18.1 crore in FY25, while losses increased from ₹15.8 crore to ₹25.8 crore. In other words, Vaaree is losing more than it earns, even before it builds a large store network or offers next-day delivery across multiple cities.

Home decor is not an easy category to scale online. People do not buy lamps, curtains or bedsheets every month. Styles are subjective, the catalogue is endless, and customers can compare similar products across Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra, Meesho, Nestasia and neighbourhood stores. Vaaree therefore has to keep spending on marketing to stay visible, but repeat purchases may take months to arrive.

Buying directly from factories can improve margins, though it is not much of a moat by itself. The same factories can supply several brands and marketplaces. AI-based moodboards may improve conversion, but such tools will soon become common across shopping platforms. The real value will come only if Vaaree uses customer behaviour to forecast demand, launch its own products and avoid carrying inventory that does not sell.

The history of Indian online furniture and decor should make investors cautious. Urban Ladder raised more than $100 million before Reliance acquired most of it for ₹182 crore. Pepperfry raised over $300 million and was later acquired at a fraction of its earlier expectations. Both built known brands, but neither produced the kind of independent outcome early investors had once imagined.

Vaaree could eventually interest a paint company, retailer or larger commerce platform looking for suppliers, customers and a home-decor brand. That outcome, however, will depend on more than catalogue size or social-media visibility.

The new money should help Vaaree build private labels, improve repeat purchases and make fulfilment cheaper. Without that, it may grow into a recognisable brand while remaining a weak business.
