VerSe’s AI Video Bet, Gnani.ai Unveils Artha, and Ather Launches Konarc

Plus Jio Platforms Gets SEBI Nod, and fundraising news about ESDS Software Solution, Ola Electric, and Purple Style Labs

At first, VerSe’s new SparkStation product looks like another bet on India’s fast-growing microdrama market. We think that misses the more interesting part.

India does seem to be taking to microdramas. Short-drama app downloads grew 403% year on year in Q1 2026, and India accounted for about 22% of global downloads. The format is also different from Reels. A microdrama may have 50 or 100 episodes of one to three minutes each, so the viewer can still spend a long time following one story.

The problem is money. Only 28% of surveyed Indian viewers had ever paid for microdramas, and just 17% had an active subscription. So audience growth looks real, but the size of the profitable market is still uncertain.

This is where AI changes the business.

Kuku says it once spent about ₹10 lakh to produce an hour of content. It has brought that down to around ₹5 lakh and believes AI can take it to ₹1-2 lakh. Mohalla Tech, which owns ShareChat and QuickTV, plans to spend ₹100 crore on AI-led microdramas this year and believes AI can cut production costs by about 70%.

VerSe is going further. It says SparkStation can reduce a ₹10-25 lakh brand film to roughly ₹50,000-75,000 and complete it in around a day. That 90% saving has not been independently proven, but the direction is believable.

SparkStation can already write scripts, create storyboards, generate actors, locations, voices, music and shots, and edit the final video. That means the line between “AI helping filmmakers” and “AI making the film” is disappearing very quickly.

And that is also VerSe’s biggest problem.

SparkStation does not own the basic video models. It uses models such as Veo, Kling and Seedance. As those models improve, more of SparkStation’s current features could become standard. So cheaper production cannot be the moat.

The better opportunity is combining production with VerSe’s distribution through Josh and Dailyhunt. Imagine SparkStation making 20 versions of the same story, Josh showing which opening works best in Uttar Pradesh or Maharashtra, and the system automatically producing more of what people actually watch.

That would be much harder to copy.

There is another reason - we watch advertising more closely than films. Brands need hundreds of videos, languages and creative variations every month. A filmmaker may make one movie in two years.

SparkStation may have entered through filmmaking, but its larger business could end up being the factory that produces and tests advertising at scale.
